rock/blues,maybe what my style has become, I am more of a free form guitar player who is subject to play any thing, maybe ill call my music, The music of the V world, just a thought, but to be honest I really don,t know how to classify my music, but here is what I do know Jimi Hendrix had big impact on me, as well as Lighting Hopskins. It is safe to say that all of the Blues moved me as child growing up with a guitar, My first real taste of the Blues was BB king, I use to listen to him on a 8 track, you cant get no deeper then the blues, it allows the guitar to run free and do what it is suppose to do , and that is dominate the song, only thing I really work from is the blues scale, I spent more time working on it then any other scale, I do spend some time with movable scales and modes, but when its time to bring it,it is going to go back to the blues scale.Of course when I pick up my acoustic the whole ball games changes, of course I use a lot f 4ths and 5ths in my progressions because its easy, and always looking for new chords to use other then the ones that the whole world is uses right now, sure it might give my music a new sound, but that,s what i shoot for sometimes . Bottom line is this if u do what the world dose then you sound like every body else , thats ok some of the time , but not all of the time.

Sight Reading or Playing by Ear ?

  • simply-mike-v-smallI started backwards when it comes  to the subject of  Music Theory even though I did take keyboards in High School, didn’t really do to well I had my own version of Mary Had little Lamb! (lol) I use to play the vocal part of songs on the guitar when I was young. That’s how I  learned to play by ear, it might have trained me to do other things as well. Since learning how to play music is about training your mind and body, your finger have to get used to moving up and down a fret board. It is important for those who are formally trained to learn how to play by ear, you might be creating out the box, what you gonna do ? put the world on pause until somebody writes it down for you, and it is important to learn how to sight read, at least well enough were you can communicate your Ideals to others and yes there are lots away to get around all of  this with all the new soft ware they got, but the goal is to become a great Musician and in the long run it will help u and not hurt u, remember if you can hum it you can play it and  everybody who plays by ear should invest in a good music theory book,I love studying music theory, so  I can become a better musician. The question is not do you practice, but what do u practice, you can’t go wrong practicing sight reading and playing by ear.

The Grant Park Blues

It’s no big mystery to anybody who checks out my music, who and what had a impact on my music. I am now slowly but surely going back to my first love, and that is the blues, when I had my adventure as a street musician, in Grant Park in the city of Alanta. It made me reconnect to my creative center, since I was playing  the Acoustic Guitar and playing other people,s music. You might ask “Whats wrong with  that ? ” nothing is wrong with that at all, but the whole Ideal behind being a songwriter is to write your own music and perform it. Don’t get me wrong, there are a few songs that belong to other people that I might do in concert one day, most of them are songs from yesterday,60’s, 70’s and early 80’s,  I’ d  put the Simply Mike V, stamp on it.

Grant Park Blues - Acoustic Guitar

Grant Park Blues - Acoustic Guitar

Ain’t no real glory in being a street muscian, only a few storys end in fame and glory. Some of  the people who walk by ain’t that friendly, some of the people I encounterd out there said some ugly things and some  said “like your music” That adventure took place  from March, 2007 to September 2008, I wrote the song, Grant Park Blues and Rail Rode Willy . Wrote a few more ,but those are the ones that hit home for me,I will be releasing a CD  called The Grant Park Blues, inspired by that adventure. That CD should be out in about a month, Check this site for more information on it. (internet only)
